How do you communicate?

Posted by Jeremy Clore on Friday, February 29, 2008

Well, there seems to be quite a buzz in the IT industry about UCC (Unified Communications & Collaboration).  What is UCC?  Well, that depends on who you ask.  What you will typically find is a vision of consolidation of most of your communications channels into a single interface (as much as possible).

In my limited research around this area, I have learned that people communicate in very different ways.  If I were to email my dad, it’s likely that I might get a phone call back.  On the other hand, if I email your typical high school to college age individual it is far more likely that they will want to continue the discussion via text messaging or posting on each others facebook pages.

It can be a challenge to keep track of all of your communications options. With wikis, blogs, desk phones, cell phones, email, social networking sites, instant messaging, text messaging, face to face meetings, etc… Who can keep it all straight?

Well, there are a few vendors in this space with some really cool ideas.  They write software that, through a single interface, allows access to email, phones, instant messaging, document repositories…. You name it!  It’s actually very cool stuff.  I’ve viewed a few demonstrations that allow you to escalate an instant message conversation into a phone call with a mouse click or call your email system and have it read you your calendar. In one cool demo I just attended, the presenter called his email system and it read his recent email to him.  The presenter then, using only his cell phone, replied to the email via his voice and the email system sent his reply as a voice attachment. I was blown away!  The presenter was Swedish and English is his second language.  When the system encountered an email in Swedish, it was able to read it back to him in his native tongue.  He also told his email system he was running 10 minutes late for a meeting and it sent an email notification to the attendees. OK… that part sounds like an enabler ;-)

So, what forms of communication do you use to grow your business?  Do you prefer face to face or facebook to facebook?  Maybe when you flip open your cell phone you actually talk into it… Or, perhaps you find yourself texting your business contacts instead?  Do you follow up via an email or a voice mail?  The more I dive into everything that is UCC, I find myself truly amazed and excited about the future of communication and the role IT has an opportunity to play.

A unified system sounds great. I'm 38. I've been active in several networking and social sites. I'm amazed but not surprised at how many people are out there connecting, sharing and doing business with one another all around the world through the Internet. I've become overwhelmed trying to keep up with everyone I've connected with. I bought an iPhone (which I'm using to post this comment) so now I can be online, check my email etc. including share biz related YouTube videos and even take orders from customers and register new IBOs from anywhere. Technology is great if used effectively and consolidation tehnology like what you mention simplifies things for us. Is corporate looking at ways to use communication technology in our business? ie: ibox update? I know this is off topic a bit but, what's the news regarding our personalized retail sites and personalized quixtar addresses? You guys are doing a great job up there by the way and thanks for keeping us informed!

Tom,

Thanks for dropping by the o-zone and sharing your thoughts on this.  I think corporate is asking the same questions that many businesses are asking today regarding UCC.  What is it? What can it do for our workforce today? What does it offer the future workforce, like new employees coming out of college?  Everyone has different communication styles and I believe that there is untapped collaboration potential by unifying these "silos" of information that we have traditionally used.

In my opinion, it is far more likely that the UCC stuff I've been looking at would impact internal corporate users first.  While some of us believe that there is a huge business potential to UCC technologies externally, it's important to consider the scope.  The ongoing Web 2.0 projects are huge and critical to providing IBOs with improved business tools and ultimately (our hope) increased profitability.  I wouldn't want to see any of that important work compromised by trying to tie it into the UCC buzz at this point.

In addition, the UCC stuff that I participate in at this point consists of asking key questions.  What is it? What can it offer us? Do we need to do anything or are we already charting the right course internally with our current collaboration strategies?  The Web 2.0 strategy is much more defined and currently being researched, developed and moved into action.

I look forward to my continued work on collaboration strategies here internally. If the company makes a decision that we need a change in our collaboration strategy, I would like to see a design that allows us to easily extend that vision to our IBOs in the future if the mutual interest is there.

I don't know if I've answered your initial questions but hopefully that helps.  As for the personalized retail sites and personalized quixtar addresses, I will ask around and get back to you.

Thanks!

Jeremy

Interesting to read the bredth of our options and that fact IT is coming up with solutions. But I don't that there is anything that can help the gadgetry.

Primary among those skills that we must have is that of in-person communication.  No gadgetry can help us strike up, maintain and grow a conversation in the face to face space. But there are many ideas, aids and resources.  Just read on another blog that there is no such thing as a "virtual beer".  Now that's food and drink for thought!

hi, i am deaf and my team communicate via emails, text message and Video phones.  Sometimes it not easy with the voice mail system, however our team is working on that in the internet version type up,  which is sooo cool.

One thing i have hard time getting my team to do is when they gave Webinar, they only use the phone lines. Personally i find that difficult cause we have to watch two screens (a tv for video interpreter, and our computer for the powerpoint).

Not long ago another nekwork marketing group showed me a ways to see a live person with video or powerpoint.  Also the video webinar have all the great features, such as live polls, and chat box.  This system was soo cool cause it can be saved in a blog environment and can be emailed to people and u can know if they watched it or not.  You can have i believe up to 10 video chat at same time.  The price was not too bad, but i decided to stick to Quixtar.  However for training or STP or communications, thats what i want for my teams.

thanks

Max

Via Quixtar, we offer a version of UCC called IBOCs. Pretty decent system that I market to a business owner friend of mine.

Via our Upline System that I'm apart of, we use in our organization and to also market to other small business owners is Communikate which is very robust and versatile. It provides email, 800#, voicemail, fax into one system as well as video conferencing and audio telecon conferencing and web-ex type presentation conferencing as well. Very innovative system. You can read more about Communikate by going to http://www.onekate.com/.

The idea of UCC is great, and there are several companies trying to combine all the phone, email, instant messaging and other tools. But while these are still in the works, there are companies who have made lives easier by at least allowing customers to combine all of their phones, with more features on the way.

I have several phone numbers and voicemail locations, and was tired of checking each one. Now, I use PhoneFusion's product PhoneFusion One and I don't have to worry about all the different numbers. They truly have Unified Communications, and I can't wait to see what they come up with next.

Question from Tom in Atlanta:

"I know this is off topic a bit but, what's the news regarding our personalized retail sites and personalized quixtar addresses?"

Answer:

I'm doing some digging on this.  It is my understanding that Brett Folkert is the guy I need to talk to for a status update.  Brett is currently out of the office, but I will seek an answer from him when he returns.

CJ,  Interesting system that you mentioned.  I did a little googling around and found several references.

Any other IBO's using this?  If you are, hit me up with a comment here and tell me likes/dislikes, etc...

Thanks!

Jeremy
